Device Grading 101: How Tech Defenders Determines Device Value

When you're ready to sell your devices, understanding the grading process can make a big difference in knowing exactly what to expect in terms of value. At Tech Defenders, transparency and clarity are at the heart of our device grading process, helping you feel confident and informed every step of the way.

How Tech Defenders Grades Your Devices

Tech Defenders uses an aggregate scoring system, carefully designed to fairly evaluate each device's condition. Devices are graded from A to F based on several components, each assigned a weighted score that collectively determines the overall condition of the device. This approach ensures you get a clear, consistent, and fair assessment of your device’s value.

Understanding Our Grading Scale:

A Grade: Mint Used Condition (~2% of devices)

Devices in this grade are essentially new or very close to new. They show minimal to no signs of wear and are very rare in the refurbished market.

  • Condition: Mint condition, new or almost new
  • Appearance: Fewer than two signs of use, no scratches, dings, dents, or blemishes
  • Screen: Perfect, without any LCD blemishes
    AA (3)A (2)
B Grade: Great Used Condition (~25% of devices)

These devices are in great condition with very minimal wear. Ideal for resale, these items have seen careful handling.

  • Condition: Minimal wear
  • Appearance: Two to four minor signs of use, no major damage like cracks, chips, dings, or dents
  • Screen: May have minor signs of screen wear, but no significant blemishes
    B (3)BB (2)
C Grade: Average Used Condition (~36% of devices)

This is the most common grade for devices, especially those sourced from schools after 2-4 years of regular use. These devices are fully functional but exhibit normal wear.

  • Condition: Average, normal wear expected from regular use
  • Appearance: Multiple signs of surface wear, small dings or scratches may be present
  • Screen: May show signs of moderate screen wear and minor LCD imperfections
    C (3)CC (4)
D Grade: Poor Condition, Fully Functional (~13% of devices)

After a few years of regular use, devices commonly fall into this category. These devices are still functional and usable but have notable signs of wear.

  • Condition: Poor cosmetic condition
  • Appearance: Moderate to noticeable scratches, deeper marks, visible dings, dents, or pitting
  • Functionality: Still fully operational but cosmetically compromised
  • Screen: Possible minor LCD imperfections but still functional
    DD (3)D (4)
F Grade: Non-Functional or Broken (~22% of devices)

Devices categorized as F Grade are non-functional or have major issues affecting their usability. They may have internal component failures or significant external damage.

  • Condition: Non-functional or broken
  • Appearance: Significant cosmetic damage, possible cracks, heavy scratches, dents
  • Screen: Severe LCD damage, scratches, or blemishes obstructing visibility
  • Functionality: At least one non-functional component; may have indicators of water damage without corrosion
    FF (3)F (2)
 Locked Devices (~2% of devices)

Devices that remain locked or restricted due to software or hardware security features (e.g., iCloud locked devices, Google management locks) typically require special handling. These devices generally receive no value in standard grading processes. It's recommended to unlock devices before submission.
